ART & CULTURE - Barcelona's different districts

LA RAMBLA AND RAVAL

This unique, lively and colourful boulevard runs from the Plaça de Catalunya down to the port, lined with newspaper and book stands, interspersed with bird and flower stalls. Thriving commerce has its centre in one of the side streets, the Portaferrissa, with its many fashionable shops and boutiques. Theatres, cinemas, bars, restaurants, banks, hotels and all manner of shops set the daily pace of La Rambla. The route features important monuments, and during the visit you can see buildings of great architectural value, such as the Betlem church, the 18th century Palau Moja or the Palau de la Virreina, where the City Hall's Cultural Department is based and exhibitions are held. In the heart of the district, we find two new cultural infrastructures built in the nineties, which form the new cultural focus of the city: the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) and the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA). A little further down from the traditional food market, popularly known as "la Boqueria", we find the multicoloured cobbled pavement designed by Joan Miró. On your right, you will find the newly rebuilt opera house, the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Following on, pavement bars and restaurants flank the central strip of the boulevard. On the street Nou de la Rambla, Gaudí magnificent Palau Güell. Across La Rambla, the totally rejuvenated Pl. Reial continues to be an obligatory meeting point. As you near the Mediterranean, you come across the antique Santa Mònica Convent, a sober 17th century building, restored to hold art exhibitions. Nearby we can visit Wax Museum.

The Gran Teatre del Liceu returns in a venue rebuilt with great artistic and technological quality. It has a stage which makes it possible to present two or three works in repertory, it improves to the maximum the view of the stage from all seats, and also increases the overall acoustic level. The Liceu, which has a main auditorium of 1,869 m² and seats 2,320 people, reproduces the ornamentation of the old opera house and has tried to preserve, as much as possible, its personality before the fire.
