Barcelona
Forum of Cultures - 2004
www.barcelona2004.org
The Barcelona
Summer Festival, known popularly as "Grec", plays a leading
role in the cultural panorama of the city. Every summer, from the end
of June until the end of July, the festival stages some of the best
national and international works aimed at a wide audience. Theater,
dance and musical performances are given at different venues around
the city. The main venues for the Grec Festival are the Teatre Grec
(Montjuïc), Poble Espanyol, Mercat de les Flors, Pl. del Rei, Convent
de Sant Agustí, CCCB and Auditori.
For five months, in the year 2004, Barcelona will once again be the
focus of world attention. The International Forum of Cultures will attract
thousands of people who will have the opportunity to take part in debates
and symposiums, visit exhibitions, and attend the World Arts Festival,
a major event centred on three themes: cultural diversity, the conditions
for peace and the sustainable city.
For 150 days, Barcelona will become a new international point of reference
within the sphere of culture and leisure with a broadly based agenda
of visual and participative activities which will have a far-reaching
impact on the world's media.
This event seeks to act as a point of reference, on a worldwide scale,
for a meeting between cultures, just as the Olympic Games symbolise
the point of reference for sporting competition.
The main events of 2004 will take place at the point where the Diagonal
meets the Mediterranean, and use will also be made of the city's other
cultural facilities, from its museums to its theatres, such as the Liceu,
the Auditori, the Palau de la Música,...
