PARC DE LA CIUTADELLA AND
PARC ZOOLÒGIC
|
|
On
the edge of the Ribera district is the Parc de la Ciutadella,
built on the site of the old military fortification from which
it gets its name. Some of the old buildings from the fort are
still in existence today, such as the chapel, the Governor's
Palace and the arsenal, today seat of the Parliament of Catalonia,
and the Museu d'Art Modern. The park was last remodeled
on the occasion of the 1888 Universal Exhibition.
Pleasant attributes such as the waterfalls and the pond, carefully
tended flower gardens, and the abundance and variety of trees
give this park a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. Housed in
the building designed as a café-restaurant by the architect
Domènech i Montaner is the Museu de Zoologia.
Another area of the park is occupied by the large Zoo.
One of the most pleasant attractions of the park is a brick
and wood building known as the "Umbracle", whose interior
spaces filled with lush tropical plants, are defined by slender
iron columns. The "Hivernacle", a marvellous wrought-iron
and glass construction, has been recently restored for exhibitions
and cultural events.
The pond located in the oval square in front of the Parliament
has the sculpture El Desconsol by the Catalan sculptor Llimona,
as its focal point, a valuable example of Modernist sculpture.
