Montjuïc was claimed by the city on the occasion of the 1929 International
Exposition, when the mountain was developed and trade fair halls and
sports installations were constructed as well as the parks and gardens
which are to be found all over the mountain. Today it is the most important
recreational area in Barcelona. It has many world famous museums, such
as the Museu d'Arqueologia de Catalunya and the Museu Etnològic,
the prestigious Fundació Joan Miró and the Museu Nacional
d'Art de Catalunya- MNAC, the theatres Teatre Grec and the
Mercat de les Flors, restaurants, sports installations, apart
from the Exhibition Area, where a large number of events, congresses,
exhibitions and shows are held every year.
Not
far from the Exhibition Area is the Poble Espanyol Spanish
Village, also built on the occasion of the 1929 Exposition, which has
examples of architecture and handicrafts from every corner of Spain.
The most emblematic image of Montjuïc is the night-time view from the
Pl. d'Espanya, with the Av. Reina Maria Cristina, the Magic Fountain
and the Palau Nacional floodlit. The Olympic Ring, nerve
centre of the competitions during the Games of the XXV Olympiad, is
currently one of the most visited places in the city.

special characteristics and the design of the building make
it suitable for all kinds of indoor sports, as well as a wide
range of musical, recreational and social events.

Barcelona is a city of festivals. Theatre and music form part
of its heritage. The Catalan capital offers a wealth of events
throughout the year. Concerts of classical and ancient music,
and traditional and innovative performances have as their showcase
the Grec summer festival, and are a major draw for our visitors.
The International Guitar Festival, the Festival of World Music,
the International Jazz Festival, the 20th-Century Music Festival
and the Pocket Opera Festival are some of the city's best known
cultural events.
Built in 1929, it is a simple building based on the Greek theatre
at Epidaurus. Set against a backdrop of stones, crowned by ivy
and aloe, it evokes the image of a disused quarry. It stages
Greek tragedies and performances of theatre and dance during
the summer (Grec Festival).
